Day 1 Recap

It starts tomorrow

You’re also welcome to come by and not help, if that sounds more appealing. But we’ll probably guilt you into holding something, or turning the handcrank radio.

Also, if you want a seat, come on by, and pick your own. I’m selling them for $10-$20 each, depending on the shape they’re in. This is going to be the primary source of funding for the bus for the first part of the summer. I’m working on whoring my body out to drug tests at UConn to pay for the second.

Since all the work tomorrow will be either inside or under the bus, we can work comfortably rain or shine.

SomDay ’08

SomDay is the day every year where we celebrate Som Juan rising from the dead and giving fireworks to all the little boys and girls. Or something like that, I don’t really remember. The last real SomDay celebration we had was two years ago when zombies invaded Main St. Last year I was at Bonnaroo on June 16th, so there was no coordinated celebration (that I know of). I took a picture of the celebration I had at Bonnaroo, but it didn’t come out, so I guess that’ll be lost to the ages.

I’ve got an idea for this year though. June 16th is a Monday this year, so in order to get more people involved, and get more people to see us, SomDay should probably be observed the day before (Sunday the 15th). The idea is to have ninjas fight up and down main street. I know ninjas (and pirates, and robots) were ideas we were kicking around after doing the zombie invasion, and that’s probably where this is coming from. One group of ninjas dressed in white, another dressed in black, on opposing sides of the street. When the crosswalk tells us to, we run into the middle of the street, and fight until it goes back to “don’t walk”. That’s when all the ninjas retreat to their respective sides, trash talking and threatening the other side until the next chance to go. We can work our way up and down Main St like this, and I think it would be pretty cool. So that’s something to keep in mind.

So I want to try something new. This is my three hundredth post on this blog, and its been running for three years ish. I don’t post too regularly, just when I feel like I’ve got something worth saying or remembering. That averages out to about a post every four days. For the next month I’m going to try and do a post every day. I’m almost certain that I won’t have anything worth saying most of those times, but I’m interested in what it’ll be. Who knows, it might be good.

Change Congress Together

Change Congress I hope you saw my post a little while back with the video Lawrence Lessig made about the Change Congress project (change-congress.org). If you haven’t seen it yet, go watch it. If you have seen it, I hope you’ve signed up on their site.

We need a change in Congress. We need members of Congress to care about what their constituency care about. I know I don’t contact my congresscritter because I’m almost certain it won’t make a difference. The few times I have contacted them, I’ve either heard nothing, or received a letter detailing their stance on the subject, and why they won’t change it. We need straightforward bills that won’t be sabotaged by earmarks snuck into otherwise useful legislation. We need Congresscritters to stop taking money from lobbyists and PACs, and start relying on public financing. The people’s voice is the one that matters.

Smooth

I’m really grateful to our friends in MN: because of their help,
everything with the DMV has been going smooth. We got the documents
we needed for temp tags, and the insurance should follow. I should be
posting a couple entries from the road, and I’ll add pictures of the
bus once I get there. Stay […]

Stresses

Well, sort of. I don’t usually get very stressed about things, but today was annoying.

I hate the DMV. A lot. When I called the seller a while back I determined that I wouldn’t need any temp tags or the like because the plates on it would be good. I only needed them to be good long enough to get me home, where I would register it in CT as an RV. But the insurance isn’t cooperating, and it turns out that we’ll need to get temp tags after all. The problem there is that the documents needed to get temp tags are all in Minnesota. So I called him up again today (he’s been really helpful through all this), and he’ll be overnighting what we need so we can get it in time to get tags and insurance.

I’d like to say, that I’m perfectly comfortable driving back unlicensed, unregistered, and uninsured. My folks however, are not. That is where most of this comes from. I know they’re looking out for me/them, but all that red tape is absurdly annoying. Oh well.

Getting the bus

So it seems a bunch of people want to come with me to Minnesota. I’m not really sure why, but I’m not going to tell them no. So I’m posting this to say that if you’re interested, and can pay for a Greyhound ticket and food, you’re welcome to come.

Its a two day bus ride out there, and a day plus ride back. If you are interested, let me know.

Where We Stand

So, I talked to the guy selling the bus both yesterday and today, and he’s really cool. He’s willing to hang on to it for a while, until I can get time to get out to MN and pick it up. So I’ll be heading out a month from today (March 6th) to […]

So, I talked to the guy selling the bus both yesterday and today, and he’s really cool. He’s willing to hang on to it for a while, until I can get time to get out to MN and pick it up. So I’ll be heading out a month from today (March 6th) to pick up the bus. By Greyhound it should take about two days to get out there, and I should arrive and leave on Saturday, returning with the bus. This means that there probably won’t be any updates to this blog until closer to when I head out, but I’m pumped anyway. Let’s see if I can carry this high for a month.

BAM!

Bus!
I finally won a bus! It’s a 1990 International with 210k miles, DOT certified until March. And it looks beautiful. I’ll be heading out to pick it up (1200 miles away) either this weekend or the next. I’ll definitely keep this updated on any developments.
