It’s time for me to get a bit more serious on this blog. October 6th (tomorrow) we’re holding a rally in the Tower’s Dining Hall to try and spread awareness of the plight of the Desert Sea Lion(s). The general public knows little of these marvelous creatures, but we feel if we can show people some cute pictures, their attitudes will change. Trust me, they’ll come around. They just will.

If you’re in the area of UConn on Saturday, we’d love to see you. We’ll take any help we can get, whether that just be sitting down to eat with us, or helping us spread the word. I hope you’ll consider our message, and with any luck, the sea lion(s) can look towards a bright future.

Story time.

About two years ago, Jack and I were watching Pinky and the Brain. There is an episode where the Brain creates a Chia Earth, right next to real Earth, which is exactly like Earth in every way. His plan it to convince people to move there, and leave real earth behind. His idea to convince people to move was to give them free t-shirts that read “I <3 Chia Earth.” The rational behind this was that everyone loves free tshirts, which is obviously true. One of us remarked that we’d like to get free t-shirts every so often, like a magazine subscription. The problem was that such a service didn’t exist, and even if it did, if you had to pay for a subscription they would no longer be free shirts. The obvious way to make it work was to make the shirts pay for themselves, with advertising. And since the shirts wouldn’t give themselves away, we started our own company.

Now myself and four friends are working hard at getting this business rolling. And it is just about there. Our website is up (landsharkshirts.com) and open to anyone who would like to subscribe. All we have left to do is to contact businesses in CT and convince them our service is valuable to them (which shouldn’t be hard, because it’s true).

And that’s the business.

Dictionary

I wonder how many words in the Dictionary have only one definition…

I should probably explain this a bit.
I’m working on a project called ‘everything is subjective.’ This project involves the use of many definitions to clarify the meanings of words used. This is likely my most pretentious project to date, and I’m proud of that. It reeks of modern art, but it feels right. I’ll probably post any updates of revelations I have while working on this. I have no clue when it will be done, but once it is finished I’ll be posting it online.

Abandoned

Doobie in my Pocket by Keller Williams

I’ve been meaning to post this song for a little while now. Its from his show at Bonnaroo, and been in my head since I downloaded the set. The problem is that since I finished writing about Bonnaroo, I haven’t really felt like writing anything else. I think that’s mostly because while I was writing about Bonnaroo, I was just writing about what was happening. I’m going to try and get back to future plans, weird hypotheticals, and other such nonsense.

So keeping with that theme, I was recently thinking about abandoned malls. I don’t know why, but one of those anti-urbanization groups is likely to blame. I heard the statistic that half of the retail space in the country is empty. When I heard it, that statistic had numbers to go with it, but you can’t expect my brain to hold on to things like that.

But there is all this bemoaning on account of companies pouring all this money into malls, and then leaving them a few decades later. Right now, malls are on the decline. Apparently big box stores (Walmart) are the new malls. I guess that makes sense, economically, at least. So towns are stuck with this massive concrete eyesore that no one wants.

“Well,” I think, “I’d like one.” And that’s how this idea started. I suppose I haven’t even explained that idea yet. But now you know how it started. Once that seed was planted, I noticed it lined up pretty nicely with some of my other dreams. I think communes, or even just really close communities are wonderful places to live. Now lets tie that idea together with old malls. If I were to acquire an abandoned mall, and open it up to housing, we could establish our own little community. It doesn’t need to be self-sustaining, or even a commune. But with enough people, we could manage property tax and utility bills.

Now you know the idea. I started to look into this, and thankfully the internet is on top of it. DeadMalls.com seems to be the authority, but the site isn’t exactly set up for my needs. They list not only dead malls, but perfectly healthy malls as well (for history’s sake). More exploring found sickmalls.wordpress.com, which lists malls which are on their way out, or already deserted. Its a good resource, but not really exhaustive. Lastly, abandonedonline.net which not only lists abandoned malls, but abandoned big box stores, churches, hospitals, schools, towns – everything. So why should I have to settle for a mall?

Big box stores are probably the cheapest to buy once they’re abandoned, but they are just one massive open space. Not really helpful to the commune idea. But all of those other abandoned buildings…sure!

This is a very long-term idea, but I’m going to keep it stewing in the back of my mind. Good things tend to come out of there.

Update: as luck would have it, my RSS reader threw this my way. Which lead me here.

Udall Legacy Bus Tour

Link to their Blog

We’re taking our motor coach coast-to-coast highlighting people — especially young people — who are finding solutions to pressing environmental and Native American issues. And we’re going to be documenting the whole trip — with text, photo, and video

These guys are structuring and setting up their trip in a similar way to how I see the Juan Way Tour working. I’m going to keep an eye on it, and see how it pans out. Obviously, the subject matter is different, which will change the way it is presented. But they are more alike than different.

Wristwatch Tattoo

So, this is an idea that I’ve had floating around for months now. I’d suspect it came to me sometime torwards the end of summer, August or the like.

I would like to get a wristwatch (analog) tattooed onto my wrist, but not tattoo any watch hands. So the idea being I could draw in whatever time I would like with a pen/marker/whatever, or just leave it blank and let it be ‘timeless.’ I like the idea of having a dynamic piece of art on my wrist, which I could change (slightly at least) whenever I liked, using the watch face as my canvas. Keep in mind I wouldn’t only be drawing on watch hands, but words, designs, whatever was appropriate for that moment.

I’ve told several people this idea, and while some like it, and find it clever/interesting; others think it’s an insane idea, and have strongly opposed this idea. I think it would be wonderful, and I assure you I have thought this through. The idea has been on my mind very often, to the point where I will glance at my wrist to check the time (I don’t wear a watch). If I had to cover this for some reason, a long sleeve shirt, or even a real watch would do the trick.

I am quite serious about doing this. I’ve been meaning to write an entry about this for some time, but it never came to my mind when I was posting. I remembered today, when I saw this post about a wristwatch piercing. I’m not really a fan of piercings (at least on myself), but the piercing is nonetheless interesting. (As far as piercings go, I’d think the Pierced Eyeglasses are more practical / cool)

Anywise, what I would like about a tattooed watch is that I would be able to design it from the ground up. It certainly doesn’t need to adhere to traditional watch designs, and I don’t expect it to. I’ll be designing that as I get free time. While I am quite into this idea, I’m probably not going to go through with it for some time, due to financial constraints. I really don’t have money to throw at a tattoo right now, or even in the next couple years (bus takes priority).

Eh.
