It is spring now. We had some fleeting glimpses earlier this year, only to have our hopes dashed by day-long snow storms. But it’s no longer a tease – as of today there is no snow left on the ground.

I had been feeling pretty down last night. It’s been a while looking for work, and things weren’t looking great. Being in the position of needing a job, and needing training for a better job is not an enviable one. Last night, I was seriously considering a survey call center position I’ve seen in several places recently. The hours and pay suck, but I’m sure they would hire me.

This morning I fired off an email to a position doing web design in Rocky Hill. I got a call ten minutes later, and we moved forward. I now have a job doing web design where I’ll be able to keep learning and advancing my skills, while not having to compromise on the pay. It’s idyllic, and I know I’m going to need to work my ass off to earn my keep. I’m ready to learn. It’s time to sell out hard. This is the only marketable skill I have and I need to squeeze it for all it’s worth.

Spring

Today is the first day that really feels like Spring. Though there is still about two feet of snow on the ground, and the pathways are still covered with ice, the air is warm and the sun is shining. This reminds me of ski trips with my dad up in Vermont. I haven’t needed a coat outside today, and Charlie hasn’t needed his sweater.

I love winter, but this change in weather has really brightened my mood. There are a lot of activities I need warm weather for, and I’ve been unable to do them lately. That doesn’t have to be the case forever, but it is the case right now. And right now, I feel light and carefree.

Harsh Storm

We had a storm blow through quickly yesterday afternoon, and it took down a large portion of a tree next to the house, as well as my canopy behind the bus.

Broke'd

The canopy was staked down, but not especially well. I can secure it to survive just about any wind, but being in a protected area I just had a couple thin stakes in it to keep it from moving. Only a third of the poles/joints are broken, but it definitely did some major damage. The tree completely missed the house, and just hit the cable/power lines coming in from the street.

Lesson learned: no matter how protected the area, always secure the canopy like the end is coming.

Dust Devil

When I was younger, I played little league baseball. On one particularly windy game, a dust devil formed on the first base line. Play paused while the kids gawked at the tiny tornado that joined our game. I kept moving towards first base, and enveloped the first-baseman who was unsure what to do. It kept moving towards second base, avoiding the grassy outfield. Now it was clear that play wouldn’t continue until the distraction was gone, and players stepped back to let it pass. It rounded second, and made its way towards third. We started to cheer the dust devil, on the verge of stealing third. Sadly, it dissipated before reaching third, tagged out by some strong breeze. Whenever I see a dust devil I remember that day, and that story.

Endo, Storm

Nishi’s laparoscopy confirmed that she has endometriosis, which she has suspected for about a year now. It’s great that we can now move forward in treating it and getting her to feel better, for the first time in years.

While she’s in bed mending, I’ve been firing off job applications left and right. Not sure yet what will pan out, but it’s progressing.

When I talked to my dad today, he mentioned the storm that will be passing through this weekend. He was talking about heading down to Niantic, to stay at my grandfather’s house, which has a generator. I thought about this, and how the bus, in Middletown, is capable of sheltering and sustaining people if the power goes out. It has its own power supply, and can cook food or heat water with propane. I like that it’s already fairly far towards being self sustaining, but it has a lot further it can go.
