RSS Awareness Day

RSS Awareness DaySo apparently today is RSS awareness day. Who knew? It turns out only about 5% of internet users use RSS feeds. Which is kind of sad. If you’re reading this in an RSS reader, give yourself a pat on the back. Anyway, I’ve been thinking for a while that I oughta post some of the RSS feeds that I love. As I’ve said probably too many times: Google Reader is amazing. I’m using it to aggregate 102 feeds right now, and its a breeze.

Anyway, on to the feeds…

According to Google Reader, some of my most read feeds are:
Fark.com – read only for the headlines
Gizmodo – I’m a gadget geek
Ask Metafilter – This is quickly becoming my favourite subscription
Waxy.org Links – great source of interesting links

I’m bored with this. Maybe I’ll post more about it later. But not today.

Change Congress Together

Change Congress I hope you saw my post a little while back with the video Lawrence Lessig made about the Change Congress project (change-congress.org). If you haven’t seen it yet, go watch it. If you have seen it, I hope you’ve signed up on their site.

We need a change in Congress. We need members of Congress to care about what their constituency care about. I know I don’t contact my congresscritter because I’m almost certain it won’t make a difference. The few times I have contacted them, I’ve either heard nothing, or received a letter detailing their stance on the subject, and why they won’t change it. We need straightforward bills that won’t be sabotaged by earmarks snuck into otherwise useful legislation. We need Congresscritters to stop taking money from lobbyists and PACs, and start relying on public financing. The people’s voice is the one that matters.

I’m really really enjoying the recent feud between Anonymous and Scientology. I’ve never really liked either of these groups, and seeing them trying to destroy each other is far more fun than anything playing on TV this year.

In case you haven’t been paying attention, anon has been bugging Scientology for a while now, but this recent spit is about Scientology trying to remove a video of Tom Cruise from the internet. Anon responded to this with DDoS attacks, and that video in the above wired article. What prompted me to make this post is the image that’s shown up recently (today?).

anon vs scientology

Now that’s just plain fun. I really can’t wait to see what happens.

Zeitgeist

I suppose this has already made the rounds, but it took me until today to see it. Some good points, some crazy points, all bound to start a fight.
Whether you agree with anything in this movie or not, its bound to make you angry. I suggest watching it, waiting a while, and then seriously considering what it has to say.

Oh, and in that same vein (I guess) remember tomorrow is Buy Nothing Day – remember to do your part.

Mall

So it seems someone has already tried living in a mall, even if it isn’t exactly how I envisioned it. This may be even cooler. Michael Townsend lived in the mall for four years while it was still running. See his site here, or listen to an interview with him here (streaming below).

More Than Juan Way

(Turn On Your) Lovelight by Phil Lesh and Friends

About a month ago I posted about the Udall Legacy Bus Tour. I’ve been keeping up with it since, but their coverage of the trip is less than thrilling. But recently, they tipped their hat to other folks on similar trips (all having an environment/sustainability theme).

First up is Biotour. Crappy site design makes it a little hard to get around, but the content on there is good, and they also have a form to fill out so you can ride the bus. That’s cool.

Your Environmental Road Trip has the presentation thing down. They’ve got a slick website, good videos (check out the trailers) and seem to have a decent idea of what they want to do.

The Big Green Bus is probably the closest to how the Juan Way Tour would look. Hell, they were even at Bonnaroo. They’ve got sponsorship, and all this great stuff, but they don’t have the media aspect YERT does.

First reaction: Crap, people are already doing this.
That kills the novelty, and sponsorship opportunities.
After thinking about it for more than a second: Wait, that means people are into this. Maybe we could actually get a decent amount of people out with us. Maybe we could even join forces.

Juan Way will hopefully be a combination of aspects in the above projects, with a little less emphasis on the environment. Yes, it’ll be a veggie oil bus…but that’s about it.

We’re taking our motor coach coast-to-coast highlighting people — especially young people — who are finding solutions to pressing environmental and Native American issues. And we’re going to be documenting the whole trip — with text, photo, and video

These guys are structuring and setting up their trip in a similar way to how I see the Juan Way Tour working. I’m going to keep an eye on it, and see how it pans out. Obviously, the subject matter is different, which will change the way it is presented. But they are more alike than different.
