Day 1 Recap

It starts tomorrow

You’re also welcome to come by and not help, if that sounds more appealing. But we’ll probably guilt you into holding something, or turning the handcrank radio.

Also, if you want a seat, come on by, and pick your own. I’m selling them for $10-$20 each, depending on the shape they’re in. This is going to be the primary source of funding for the bus for the first part of the summer. I’m working on whoring my body out to drug tests at UConn to pay for the second.

Since all the work tomorrow will be either inside or under the bus, we can work comfortably rain or shine.

So apparently today is Earth Day. On Fairfield Way today there were all these folks who set up booths about their environmentally friendly businesses or products, so I went around and talked to a bunch of them to see if they would be interested in helping out the tour.

I went over to some folks proclaiming the wonders of their Green Roofs, and asked them how that would play out on a bus. (For the record: I think I only mentioned a green roof for the bus once, but that idea really caught on, and I kept hearing about it for months. It is probably not going to happen) These folks had some really pretty and impractical green roof solutions. Their stuff is modular, so it comes in these little blocks that you put on your roof. Long story short, there are way too many reasons that this (and really any green roof solution) isn’t worth it (for the bus). I’m putting a deck or something on top.

Next I went over to a UConn professor who is doing work on mass producing biodiesel. Just to clarify for those who don’t know, biodiesel is derived from veggie oil, but through a chemical reaction, is made pure enough to run through an engine without modification. My approach is to just heat the veggie oil to have it reach the necessary viscosity to run through the engine. He isn’t very interested in that, and I’m not very interested in bringing a chemistry lab along on the bus, so odds are we won’t be able to help each other.

Last I went to the solar guy’s tent. I talked to a guy from Sunlight Solar about a potential sponsorship of the tour. He said it would have to go through the dude who owns the company, so I shot off an email. I’m not really expecting much to come from it, but it would be nice. If nothing really happens, there are hundreds of companies who do solar that would be interested in helping us out. We just need to find them.

Back Home

We got home yesterday around 9 or 10 in the morning. The bus is sitting in its spot next to the garage, and it is just as long as the building (maybe longer). Lots of stories from the trip. Hopefully Ali will help me tell some of them. Until then, there […]

I’m probably not going to do any more work on the bus for a while, because I unfortunately have other things that I need to get done as well. As always, check here for updates.

We got to Rochester around 1800, and left around 2200 or 2300 central time, after a night on the town with Kim Wilson and Co., but that deserves its own post.

Moving again

So we were stuck for about 48 hours in Pittsburgh, but we’re moving
again, and we’re past Chicago, on our way to Madison. We should get
to Rochester by tonight.

We’re stuck in Pittsburgh, thanks to snow in Ohio, which is now heading here.

Smooth

I’m really grateful to our friends in MN: because of their help,
everything with the DMV has been going smooth. We got the documents
we needed for temp tags, and the insurance should follow. I should be
posting a couple entries from the road, and I’ll add pictures of the
bus once I get there. Stay […]

Stresses

Well, sort of. I don’t usually get very stressed about things, but today was annoying.

I hate the DMV. A lot. When I called the seller a while back I determined that I wouldn’t need any temp tags or the like because the plates on it would be good. I only needed them to be good long enough to get me home, where I would register it in CT as an RV. But the insurance isn’t cooperating, and it turns out that we’ll need to get temp tags after all. The problem there is that the documents needed to get temp tags are all in Minnesota. So I called him up again today (he’s been really helpful through all this), and he’ll be overnighting what we need so we can get it in time to get tags and insurance.

I’d like to say, that I’m perfectly comfortable driving back unlicensed, unregistered, and uninsured. My folks however, are not. That is where most of this comes from. I know they’re looking out for me/them, but all that red tape is absurdly annoying. Oh well.
